The Tennessee Department of Agriculture Division of Forestry Wednesday suspended the issuance of burn permits across much of the state, including Middle Tennessee and the Cumberland Plateau. A forecast for strong winds and low relative humidity increased the risk of a controlled debris burn becoming a wildfire.
The Division of Forestry evaluates burning conditions daily. Rain is expected to return to the area Thursday, with a mix of rain and light snow possible in the Upper Cumberland Thursday evening.
A burning permit is required by law for outdoor burning from Oct. 15th through May 15th and only when conditions are conducive to safe burning. The permit is free and can be obtained online or by phone.
