Would-be scammers are hard at work trying to take your money and personal information. A Warren County resident this week saw through the scam attempt and alerted authorities.
A woman told our news department she received a phone call from a person claiming to be from the U.S. Government. The caller claimed the woman was to receive a $9,000 payment, but to receive it, she would first need to purchase a $200 gift card from Kroger., then send a payment western union to the caller. She was advised to keep the caller on the line while she made the transaction. Instead, the woman went to the sheriff’s department and put an officer on the line, at which time the caller hung up.
Authorities say whenever you receive a call saying you must send money to receive money, it is a scam.
