A number of Warren Co. citizens and dignitaries turned out for the annual Memorial Day Service held at the Warren Co. Airport Monday morning. Joey Topper, Commander of the VFW Post 5064 was the master of ceremonies. This year’s speaker was Retired Lieutenant Colonel of the U.S. Army James Cantrell. Cantrell was a 1960 Warren Co. graduate and attended MTSU where he graduated in 1964 with a degree in education. Cantrell went on to serve in Vietnam where he received many accomodations, including a bronze star for valor. Cantrell said then he was amazed at the quality of american soldiers and what they could and would do. He thanked the people of Warren Co. for giving David Gray, who gave the ultimate sacrifice by jumping on a grenade and saving many lives. He concluded by challenging citizens to keep making America a great and better America.
Mary Katherine Williams sang the national anthem and God Bless America. County Executive Herschel Wells and Mayor Jimmy Haley read the list of fallen war heroes of Warren Co. from World War One, World War Two, Korea, Vietnam and the War on Terror. The ceremony concluded with the playing of Taps by Bill Stewart.
