The driver of a vehicle that crossed the bypass median and crashed into another vehicle, killing the other driver, was sentenced Wednesday after entering a plea of guilty on two counts. 28 year old Asia Smartt pled guilty to charges of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault in the crashed that killed 77 year old John Winburn last December. Smartt was sentenced to a total of 14 years. She will serve a year and a half in jail, then will be released to community corrections with numerous restrictions, which include no drivers license for the next eight years. Prior to Wednesday’s hearing, Smartt had served 150 days in jail.
Police said Smartt was driving a 2002 Nissan Pathfinder on the bypass when the vehicle drifted across the highway, went airborne and crashed into a 2013 Chevy Cruze, driven by Mr. Winburn. Mr. Winburn’s wife, Patricia Winburn was injured in the crash as was Jay Fults, who was a passenger in the Pathfinder.
Earlier this year, Smartt was indicted by the Warren County Grand Jury for vehicular homicide, vehicular assault and reckless aggravated assault.
