Authorities in Grundy County say the father of a shooting victim will not face charges for shooting the victim’s alleged assailant. 50 year old Jerome Powell opened fire on his ex-son-in-law, 37 year old John Wesley Smith, after Smith had fatally shot Powell’s daughter, 32 year old Carolyn Powell and had shot and wounded 38 year old Christopher Hurst. Smith also shot Mr. Powell during the altercation.
Grundy County authorities said Jerome Powell will not face charges because he was trying to protect the rest of his family, including six children who were inside the house.
The shooting happened in the front yard of Powell’s residence on Highway 56 in Altamont.
Smith is reportedly in custody.
