Frigid Temperatures Keeping MES Busy

Dec 23, 2022 | 10:19 AM

At TVA’s request, McMinnville Electric System and Caney Fork Electric is reporting an emergency shortage of generation and/or transmission. Partial curtailment of large firm load is necessary to prevent a system-wide blackout.
In a press release, TVA has implemented Step 50 due to losses of 2 generation plants at Cumberland in Cumberland City, TN and 1 at Bull Run in Clinton, TN. As directed by TVA, MES will be conducting rolling blackouts. The electric grid is under abnormally high stress due to unforeseen circumstances. MES apologizes for the inconvenience this may cause you, and they will inform the public when these rolling blackouts are concluded and the grid is back to normal.
IN the meantime, TVA has directed all 154 power companies to interrupt power for 15 minutes each hour, starting around 11am, until the order is cancelled by TVA. This is due to the outage experienced by TVA at Cumberland Plant and Bull Run Plant. MES and CFEC must comply with this directive.
