Tennessee Among Worst States for Fatal Crashes Involving Elderly

Tennessee had the eighth most fatal traffic crashes involving older drivers in 2016, according to a new report by TRiP, a non-profit transportation research group.
There were 233 fatal crashes in 2016 in the state of Tennessee involving at least one 65+ driver, accounting for 22 percent of all traffic fatalities in the state.
Only Florida, Texas, California, Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Ohio had more fatal crashes involving at least one elderly driver.
According to the TRIP report, an estimated 46 million Americans are 65 or older, accounting for 15 percent of the total population.
In the last decade, the number of licensed drivers 65 and older increased 38 percent and the proportion of licensed drivers 65 and older rose from 15 percent to 19 percent.
