State officials say 70 communities in Tennessee, including Viola, Van Buren County and Sparta are receiving nearly $28 million in grants to improve infrastructure and health and safety programs.
Gov. Bill Haslam said in a news release Wednesday that the Community Development Block Grants will help economic growth and create better environments for residents of the communities receiving the grants to live and work.
The state Department of Economic and Community Development said the grants are funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The money will be used for housing rehabilitation and improvements to water, sewer and fire protection systems.
Viola will receive $166,430 for fire protection improvements. Van Buren County will receive $296,310 for fire protection improvements. And Sparta will receive $498,000 for sewer system improvements.
