Two people were airlifted to hospitals following a two-vehicle head-on crash on Mt. Zion Road near Viola. According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, a 2000 Ford F-150 pickup, driven by 18 year old Thomas Meadows, was traveling southbound on Mt. Zion Road when it rounded a curve and collided head-on with a northbound 2017 Nissan Titan, driven by 46 year old Tammy Murphy. The investigating officer said it appeared both vehicles had ventured over the center line as they rounded the curve. The impact sent the Meadows vehicle crashing into a bridge abutment. The vehicle overturned and came to rest on its top in the creek. The Nissan went off the road and came to rest on the creek bank.
Meadows was airlifted from the scene to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga. Murphy was airlifted to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville.
The THP said neither driver was wearing a seat belt. The crash remains under investigation.
